Ian Shaw

Ian's birth announcement, December 18,
1969. Thanks Fi!
I
have wanted to create this website for some time now having noticed
so many on other actors like Caine, Connery, Holm and Hopkins with
very little out there on Robert Shaw. I believe strongly that were
he still alive today, he would have surpassed them all and I would
like him to be remembered for more than Quint in Jaws, as
unforgettable as the role might be.

I
correspond with many of Robert Shaw’s fans from around the world now
thanks to this website. It is always a pleasure to read your
comments and to answer any inquiries you have to the best of my
ability. I am especially fond of those that begin with “I
enjoyed his performances in From Russia with Love, The Sting and
JAWS but never realized he made so many other films.”, “I
never knew he was also an author.”, or “I didn’t know he had a son
who is also an actor, what movies has he made?”

I
received a response from Robert Shaw’s son Ian recently, also a very
talented albeit underrated actor and would like to share this
excerpt with you, as I am sure Ian would not mind;

"I have always been extremely proud to be his son. He was a great
man, a loving father, a generous, wonderful spirit, very funny,
often outrageous, and a fabulous actor. His family was completely
devastated to lose him. Whatever you may hear in the press, those
that actually knew him, loved him dearly."

Even
those of us who never knew him. His passing was devastating for some
of us too and I don't particularly wish to discuss it further
either.

I was
quite happy to receive a response from Ian Shaw, to have had the
opportunity to pass along my best wishes to such a promising actor
who will surely be discovered in the near future and also to learn
that I have never idealized his father as I had often been accused.
What a great gift Ian gave to me, one that only he could, the gift
of the truth, one that I value most in life. I wish to thank him
with all my heart for that. I was also quite happy to learn that he
finds my website "very impressive". I will not be contacting Ian
again, he is quite busy and he has answered any questions I would
have had. I would not only find it exceptionally rude to
persist but I would fear upsetting him as I was not only devastated
by his father's death but also my own a decade ago. I
respect the Shaw family's privacy and ask that we all do as I would
have respected Robert Shaw's privacy. Had he lived, this
website would not exist. It is mostly for you, his fans.
May he never be forgotten.

I am sure
all Robert Shaw fans would agree that were he still alive today, he
would be extremely proud of Ian as well. What a
beautiful, loving statement Ian made about his father, it moved me
to tears. Although I
have read many comments that Ian is the “spitting image” of his
father, I also see a resemblance to his mother, the beautiful and
gifted actress, Mary Ure.
